whaaa happened?

i first noticed Lucy on a rescue organization’s website. she wasn’t under their care but listed contact information for her.

Lucy is a ~2 year old border collie mix who was found in Merced – not only stray, but pregnant. she was malnourished and had demodex mange. she was brought to a rescue shelter in Hollister and has been recuperating in Gilroy. she is gaining weight and her mange is being treated.

i met her 2 weeks ago when her puppies were 2 weeks old. she was a bit shy but came to me and snuggled up after a while. a real sweetheart of a dog. i started to fall in love with her that day and figured that i’d adopt her after her puppies were weaned.

after reading more about mange and how it can indicate an inherent immune deficiency when it occurs in older dogs, i began reading more about it and what might be involved if it recurs.

i’ve had fitful sleep deciding what to do about her. she is truly a sweet dog and i felt like we bonded in the short time we were together; however, it’s hard for me to justify taking on a dog that might have lifelong health issues. sure, there is a chance that she’ll be fine, and i hope that she is.

there is an adoption fair for Lucy and her puppies at the end of March. hopefully her fur will have begun to grow in by then and someone else will fall in love with her. the reason it’s hard for me to say no to her is exactly the reason why i believe she’ll be fine – she is a sweetheart of a dog and any potential adopter will see that. right now, that adopter can’t be me, but i know she’ll be okay. what remains to be seen is whether or not i’ll be okay with it.
