not much ado about blogging

it started as the usual "i know, i need to blog more" type of thing. then it morphed into "i'm moving and have no time to do much else but deal with that and breathe". now i'm winding down from the move and am pleased to still be breathing.

there have been significant changes at work and at home over the past few months. let me try to recap.

on the homefront
i am fortunate enough to have been able to purchase a condo - not in town, but one from the university. there are a number of units that are set aside for staff and faculty to purchase and with newer developments on campus opening up, many of their older units became available. one of them is now mine - escrow closed late in July and i'm mostly moved in now. i'm lucky to have Gouda with me until his lady finishes nursing school in a couple of years, so he can help me pay my mortgage. ;-)

i'm really happy with the place so far - it's much closer to work, has tons more natural light than my last apartment (a.k.a. the bat cave), has a pretty decent layout and feels the most like home compared to any other place i've lived besides, well, home. i'm mostly unpacked and still dream of getting a pup - might be a more viable option after i return from a trip in late October.

at work
changes at work happen all the time - that's the nature of working at an educational institution. i don't like that i meet really good people and they inevitably move on, but it's also a good chance to meet new people in that turnover.

our latest round of personnel turnover was a bit rough. one of my long-time labmates graduated, which is great for him, of course, but i do find myself missing daily interactions with him. we did get a new lab member who is awesome - a postdoc who has a great sense of humor, wonderful pop culture knowledge, is a sports fan, and oh yeah, he's a really smart scientist. the other new member - the jury is still out. no, that's being nice. if i'm a juror, i've got my verdict, and it's not a good one. would i prefer that he weren't here? definitely. is it likely that he will leave before his year-long appointment is up? no.

so, as one of my friends always tells me, it's time to suck it up. time to just deal with him, whether it be ignoring, pacifying, whatever. it's not a situation that will easily be resolved, but for now i'm glad i'm not the only person who feels this way. nice to have others to commiserate with.

all in all, things are good. it's just too bad that i can't enjoy coming to work as much as i used to.
