Robby Glantz 3 day power skating clinic: day 2
day 2: the focus of tonight's class was lateral movement, speed, and stopping. i was pleased that i could stop well enough on my bad side that it was sufficient for me to hang with the main group. i've got to work on finding my outside edge and using both skates for my stop, and remember to stay low when i do stop. oh, and to try to separate my feet so that they're not in line with each other. in another drill, i found i'm more comfortable pushing the puck ahead of me on my forehand side but need to get used to using my backhand for such purposes.
the thing that really made me feel how sore my legs were was towing a partner down the ice. we put on belts and our partner took a knee and hung on behind us, while we skated the length of the ice, towing relatively dead weight behind us. (Susan, the term "dead weight" is said in the fondest of terms here). i figured we'd switch on the way back, but it wasn't my turn to be the dead weight until one more trip down the ice.
we did some drills to help us find our edges - this one still gets me. i like inside edges a lot more than outside edges. and i really don't like the outside edge on my right side, though that's the side that hasn't been broken. must. find. edges.
pain report: hello, groin. hello, hip flexors. hello, quads. and yes, hello, butt.
the bummer of the night was that my backup stick, a Mission dangler that my friend Rick sent me, was gone from the locker room when i got up to leave. i know it was in the room when we got off the ice because i saw it on my way into the room. i figured someone mistakenly picked it up and took it home, but they'd realize it when they were unpacking/packing their stuff and would bring it back the next night. thanks, person who took my stick, for a fitful night of sleep.
