encroaching on Andrea's turf...
this might be tmi...probably is, so read at your own risk. key words: sinus, mucus, snot.
so i've been stuck with this cold (yes, after getting over the flu) and am currently spending my 4th consecutive weekend in bed. thank goodness for the work lappy. i saw a very arrogant, uninterested doctor at urgent care on monday when i wanted to make sure i wasn't dealing with a bacterial infection - my mom raised me with the myth (?) that colored snot signals more than a virus. he was no help, so i stuck it out. felt no better by thursday, so i saw someone filling in for my primary care doc and she confirmed that jerko was probably correct, but was much more patient and personable about it. she suggested that i try: nasal sinus washes.
i dreaded these washes the rest of the day, but she assured me that it would help. so, that night i found myself in a hot shower with a cup of salt water. with the help of a 10ml syringe from work, i proceeded to shoot this stuff up my nose. not fun, not completely without discomfort, but out came the snot. i mean in bucketfulls. clean off face, repeat. and repeat.
the sinus washes definitely helped keep my clear for about an hour. i'm on day 3 of the washes and while i think they're helping, it's not significantly enough for my liking. i had hopes of just cleaning up around the house a bit this weekend, but it looks like that's on hold until later as i'm still dealing wtih congestion, coughing, and that good stuff. the upside: ab workout!

I'm sorry you're still sick!
I use a ceramic neti pot like this one for myself. I use less than a half-teaspoon of salt; no salt is uncomfortable, and too much salt, ditto.
Feel better!

the good news is this should help a LOT before too long. well that, and you got a whole blog post out of it.
here's to a happy snot exodus!
