phew, i could use a weekend

i am so mentally drained right now that my entire body could break down (maybe it has?) and i wouldn't know it.

i'd been thinking about my grandma more than usual because of Thanksgiving and knowing that she passed away on november 28 in 1988. 19 years ago but the hurt hasn't lessened any. i can still barely talk about her without crying.

a very close family friend of ours passed away on November 29 after a long illness and very rough last few weeks. i was fortunate enough to have seen him in the hospital shortly before he passed. when he was still conscious, i was able to sit with him and keep him company, hold his hand, and even get a brief glimpse of a smile and twinkling eyes from the man i'd known my entire life.

so on saturday, i woke up and immediately headed to monterey. R's funeral was at 11 am and then there was a very nice memorial service at 1, followed by a reception. all of the services were brief but meaningful and very touching. my dad spoke at the memorial service, as did a few other folks. i was fine until my dad's voice cracked, then it was all over. his older son gave a funny, eloquent, and heartwarming speech, which i am sure will stay in my memory forever. it was nice to see friends and familiar faces at the reception, but by the end of the afternoon my entire face hurt. my sinuses were full, my eyes felt like they were so swollen.

in the early evening, Gouda and i left monterey and headed to SJ for the Sharks game. we were hesitant to go, but R's family knew that he would have wanted us to go to the game. unfortunately, we did, and we sat through 2 periods of some of the worst hockey i've ever seen this team play. made it home by 11 but it was an exhausting day.

Gouda and i headed back over the hill today, leaving at 9 to arrive in palo alto to help some friends move. we packed a 12' rental truck and Gouda's car with an entire apartment by 12:30 or so, then drove to Los Gatos and unpacked said truck and car. just to make things fun, the old apartment was upstairs, and the new place is part of an old victorian, so there were stairs leading up to the place and skinny, steep stairs within. we had everything unpacked by 4:30 and then came home. it's only 10 but i am SO ready for bed.

i was good about not lifting anything that was too heavy or awkward, and am pleased to report that my shoulder held up fine. i hope it won't be too sore tomorrow - that will give me confidence that i can return to non-tournament hockey some time in january. of all things to hurt, it's my GAB ankle and right knee. the ankle - i'm sure it's just from all the stairs, and the knee is the funky one that's been hurting then fine, hurting then fine. hoping to stay stuck on the "fine" part soon - will begin by crashing into bed very soon.

Comments:
