jury duty - no mas!
wooo, i was worried when i got my jury summons late last month. i'd gotten lucky in the past and either never had to report or reported for just one day. i figured i'd push my luck and not try to "get out" of it this time around.
since i was scheduled to appear in monterey, i told my boss that i would either 1) be at jury duty on monday, or 2) be at home taking a vacation day on monday. i checked my jury status last friday and wooooo, my group was excused! but now, i guess instead of getting the 2 or 3 year free pass, it's only 1 year if you don't get called. i'll still take that.
so, i spent saturday cleaning up around the house, in lab, and then finally at a party with B. his boss was having what i guess is his annual party, so i agreed to go along. it's weird because even though i know everybody in B's lab, that's only a small part of the entire lab - most of them are hidden in a building across the street where they stare at computers and do amazing things on a daily basis. of course, me being me, i just clung to the few people i know and didn't branch out to meet many new people. that was okay with me, though.
i headed to monterey after hanging out at the party for a couple of hours. Maddy is usually inside when i get home, and my mom has already gotten her riled up by saying "Jena's home!" well, this time i pulled up and walked in the front door - no Maddy! then she appeared at the back door, seemingly cutting her roaming short. once the door opened, it was the beginning of the best greeting ever. she scooby-doo'd across the backroom floor, then across the living room floor. she put on the brakes - hard, and slid into some cabinets, then overcompensated on the get-up and slid on her other side past my legs. she finally got to her feet and waggled her butt over to me. lots of fur flying, many kisses from Maddy...it was great. :-)
did lots of around-the-house kind of stuff on sunday and monday. ran errands with my mom (and took Maddy along for the ride), washed one of their cars and my car, did some yard work, watered some plants, etc.
made it back to santa cruz on monday night, but it was too late to make the AT2 game. 's okay, seems like the bench was pretty full, and i wasn't looking forward to a semi-late game.
the second best thing about having Monday off is that it makes for 4-day work weeks. wheeeeeeee! i'll have to do this more often, and it will be justified, because i'm close to my max. accumulation for vacation. wheeeeeeee!

We have another friend who just got called. His story? "We were all sitting in the basement jury room till we were excused due to fire." Yep, there was a small kitchen fire near them, so the whole group was excused. I thought it was pretty funny.
