all he wants for christmas...
you got it...his 2 front teeth!
so, Justin goes to play floor hockey last night on campus. the game was at 5, so he's usually back up in lab and ready to go home by 6:15 or so. i'm sitting at my desk (ignoring the stooopid computer - see previous post) and he calls my cell phone. it's only 5:35. strange. he says "i may need you to come pick me up". being the calm person i am (hah!), panic instantly sets in. i ran through all the different possibilities in my head so fast - broken ankle, broken arm, head wound, broken something. he said he got hit in the mouth, so i pack up and go get him.
(warning to gag-reflex sensitive pregnant folk or those who don't like descriptions of injuries!)
when i see him (with ice bag on mouth) it was so sad. we got him home and looked at the damage - cut bottom lip and the biggie: left front tooth out of alignment. like, pushed back in his mouth. not loose, but definitely not right. fortunately there was no profuse bleeding or anything, but it's definitely not a good situation. my immediate thought was to go to the ER, but then i realized that they would not likely have a dentist on hand and would just charge an unbroken arm and leg for whatever they did. i called a bunch of dentists in town, but got mostly answering machines. my dentist was out, but left his home and cell phone numbers to call for emergencies. i left a message and waited for his call.
good thing, at this point, is that Justin didn't feel any pain at all. phew. my dentist called back and said that the first thing that needed to be done was to push the tooth back into alignment - either at home by ourselves, or we could meet him at the office and he'd do it. yeah, we met him at the office. a couple of novacaine shots later and after anxious waiting in the uh, waiting room, Justin came out looking pretty normal.
we haven't seen the bill yet, but it'll be a biggie and it'll hurt since he's not officially hired yet, and therefore doesn't have dental insurance. but his teeth are aligned again. he'll likely need a root canal for that tooth, but he goes back to the dentist on saturday for a checkup.
yikes. that experience last night made me think i'll never be ready to be a mom. i panic when it's not necessary to panic and the littlest things freak me out. sigh.
at least his mouth is okay for now. i'll deal with motherhood later.

floor hockey knocked his teeth out of whack?! damn, i guess you wouldn't normally wear a mouthguard for that? ouch. poor justin.
wrt motherhood, it doesn't sound like you went into hysterics and shut down, but handled the situation pretty well imo. =D

OMG, poor Justin. How are his teeth now? Hopefully okay? Reclaiming their lodging?
And yeah, I second what Andrea said - sounds like you handled it fine.

thanks, yous! i felt quite panicky through the whole thing, but i guess it's okay now.
tooth update: still in place, still no pain. just gotta wait for saturday's visit to see if he needs a root canal.
