we's back!
wow. we made it back to monterey on thursday evening and then proceeded to hang out on the driveway up to my parent's house for 3 hours. the poor truck just couldn't make it up that hill with the uhaul attached. it was pretty amusing, actually, and i'm glad my brother was there because i would have cried - drive 3200 miles and get stuck (literally) 500 feet away from home. for those of you who know the driveway, it makes sense why we'd get stuck. it's twisty and steep. ugh.
i can understand why my mom thought i was kidding when i called her from my cell phone and told her we were stuck. with the trailer, we couldn't back down the hill, so we just sat there with the brakes applied. then, here comes my poor dad, lack of energy and all, down the hill with a wheelbarrow filled with bricks to block the trailer and truck tires. we were able to secure the truck and trailer so that the engine could be turned off.
we hung out in the truck, called tripleA and found out that they would absolutely NOT attempt to help us because we had a uhaul trailer attached. uh, okay. whatever. so my parents are calling local tow truck companies trying to find one that will attempt to pull us up the hill. in the meantime, my mom has talked to our neighbor, whose husband is always playing with trucks, farming equipment, big vehicles, etc. he was coming home from work in gilroy and said that either his 4WD tahoe or trencher (that happened to be at the house for a side project of his) would be able to pull us up.
about 2 hours after initially getting stuck, it was completely dark and since we live off of the highway, i was standing at the bottom of our driveway with a flashlight to flag down the tow truck guy who said he'd give it a shot. his idea was to unhitch the trailer from the truck, have my brother drive his truck up the hill, then back the tow truck down, hitch it to the trailer, and then pull it up the hill. good luck with the first part (unhitching), buddy. fortunately, Coy (our neighbor) showed up at this point and convinced the tow truck guy that unhitching the trailer was not going to be easy. Coy went up the hill to start up his trencher, but the battery had died. he eventually brought down some chains and his tahoe, hooked the back of his tahoe up to the front of Justin's truck, and after losing about 1/4" of his back tires by spinning out, managed to get 4wd going and hurray, we were home!
we spent friday deciding what was staying in monterey and what was coming to santa cruz. that meant unloading most of the trailer, then reloading the things that had not yet reached their final destination. (speaking of final destination, i was very sad that my flight attendant did not use that phrase when we landed in boston).
drove to santa cruz on saturday morning, unloaded the trailer one last time, and then got rid of the damn thing downtown. actually, i should be nice to the trailer. after all, it helped bring my brother home.
