wanted: time to blog
it's not like i've been that busy lately, but i just haven't seemed to find the time to sit down and write (okay, type) like i am doing now. but finally, here i am. thanks to a sore (and teeny bit bloody) ankle, i'm skipping out on the AT2 game. i was still going to go but there were already around 14 people showing up, and i didn't want to drive over the hill for a 9:45 game to play just a little. i know, i'm lame. but so is my ankle, and that's my official excuse for the night.
Justin (bro) and i had a busy weekend filling a dumpster. yes, a dumpster. i took friday off of work and we went to monterey on thursday evening. that way, we had an early start to the day on friday, which ended up consisting of emptying our old 9' x 10' shed, tearing it down, and cleaning/sorting/getting rid of some of the contents.
we had stored lots of things in the shed over the years. it was bike storage, childhood toy "safekeeping", random crap storage, etc. i put the safekeeping in quotes because the toys were supposed to be safe. when we emptied out the shed, we found that they were not. on one hand, i guess it tells us that we should have cleaned and checked the contents more frequently, but on the other hand, it's a storage shed! anyhow, my brother and i had this original Brio train set that we loved to play with. it had the coolest bridges, tracks, painted cars, and accessories that were all made out of wood. you can still find them today but they're much more expensive since the plastic tracks have been mass-marketed. we would play with this a lot. it was really more me watching him play with them, but just thinking of it brings back so many happy memories for both of us. well, we got to the box that had the train set in it and lifted it up. the entire bottom of the box had rotted away, the plastic bag that the train set was in had been chewed up, and the individual pieces were either half eaten, wet and dirty, or both. i guess gophers had filled the space between the ground and the bottom of the shed, then ground termites had gotten to the box of toys. damn creatures! i almost cried but managed not to. instead, we finished emptying the shed and i enjoyed venting my anger by taking a sledgehammer to the old shed and a few gopher holes i found.
we sorted through the pieces of the train set that were salvageable, and my mom spent part of the day today cleaning them off and then setting them in the sun to dry. the critters had also managed to get into a box containing my brother's lego, but most of that can be washed and dried since it's plastic.
the rest of the afternoon, i hacked away at some monster weeds and cleared the area surrounding the shed, then called it a day.
saturday was spent putting together a foundation for the new shed: concrete piers surrounded by chicken wire and a wood base for the shed. then the shed (which has a plastic bottom) was put up and it surprisingly took us about 4 hours. it seemed like it would only take 2 hours or so, but at least it's up. and filled. and, hopefully, critter proof.
we spent sunday putting things into the new shed, sorting some more, and somehow managing to fill the dumpster. between tree branches, spiny thorns, and bulky metal pieces hanging off the dumpster, i did a pretty good job of scratching myself up. but the yard looks much better and my parents are happy, so it's all been worth it!
i think i'm going to spend the rest of my no-hockey night reading (for fun), watching TV, and finding other ways to be lazy.
