weekend happenings
went to Monterey on friday night to have dinner with my parents and a friend who was visiting from Japan. we met her family in 1986 when we were living in Japan for 10 months and now her daughters live in SF - one is a stay at home mom and the other is doing her postdoctoral work at UCSF. she had lived in Monterey for a while in the early 1990s but hadn't been back since. she finally retired from teaching this spring and her first trip was to see her daughters and us!
she's doing great, as are her daughters. listening to her and seeing her made me miss Japan and really wish that i knew the language better. even what little i did know has pretty much vanished, so once again i'm making a vow to re-learn what i knew at one point. when i'm going to do this, i don't know. but i even brought back some basic Japanese language books that i used in elementary school when i was first learning.
came back to santa cruz on saturday afternoon, avoided the lab and puttered around at home. nothing too exciting.
came up here to lab on sunday morning, all ready to get my experiment ready for today. except NOTHING went right. after spending 2+ hours trying to get this stupid brain to cut, i ended up with 2 useable sections. 2. two. as opposed to the 180 that i usually get. grrrrrrrr! and no more backup brains to cut. so all in all, pretty much a wasted 2 hours that just ended up pissing me off.
went home to find out that my fantasy baseball team really sucks. as if i didn't know that already. watched the Giants game, washed my bedroom windows from the outside and wow, what a difference that made!
headed up to Belmont for practice and had a great time. worked on crossovers a bit with Vivo and Liz, and emphasized each crossover with a "rrreeee" (i was feeling like The Cheat for some reason). we scrimmaged a bit and it was chaotic but fun - a good way to end a day that started off quite crappily.
yes, i just said crappily.
