whaaa happened?

so i am really supposed to be reading a paper for journal club that we are having tomorrow, but Vivo was complaining that she didn't have anything to read, so here i am.

funny happenings at work today: played with the Merriam-Webster online dictionary. there are pronunciations (that you can listen to) for some words and we were toying around with these today. it all started last week with a discussion of how we pronounce "semi". Georgia played both on her computer, which is hooked up to our speakers...so all of the pronunciations were clearly broadcast across the lab.

so today, Georgia randomly looked up a word and played the sound on the speakers. got everyone's attention. we were discussing one of the figures from the journal club paper and found that some of the pictures looked like prosciutto. sure enough, "prosciutto" is heard across the lab. after playing a bunch of different words, we found that there is both a man and a woman who pronounce the words for us.

long story short, Georgia decided to communicate mostly through the computer, which was highly entertaining. she concluded the day by playing the "goodbye" entry on the computer before walking out the door. okay, we're easily amused in lab. but really, if you were there, you would have laughed.
